I was born in Lungi, branded the ‘gateway to Sierra Leone’. I attended the Saint Augustine Primary and Secondary schools in Lungi.
I had the dream of becoming a journalist when I was in secondary school. In 2003 I gained admission at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. I started with the Diploma in Mass Communication program. In the final year of my Diploma, I volunteered with a community radio station, Citizen FM 103.7. I can still remember the first day I sat in front of a microphone. I was so nervous that the papers continuously rumbled and created some awful noise.
I continued the following year with a BA in Mass Communication. At year two our department opened a radio station for students who were interested in broadcast journalism. I worked with a team that produces and presents a program called ‘Money Line’. Following this, I had six months internship with ABC-TV an independent commercial TV station. The internship was in partial fulfillment for my degree. During vacation, I went an internship in Liberia at STAR Radio in Monrovia, a partner of CTN. At Star, I learnt how to do digital audio editing and basic radio journalism skills.
When I returned from my two weeks work with Star, I started work with CTN. I started off as a newscaster and later started producing and presenting a programme titled Review of the Week. I became employed after some six months. I was then in my final year in college and it was really challenging to combine work and school. I struggled on with it until I finished my course in August of 2008.
