It is a sad indictment for Sierra Leone to have a place like Kroo Bay in the city without basic amenities.
Abdul Tejan-Cole, Chairman of the Anti-corruption Commission spoke at the launch of the maiden report on the state of human rights in Sierra Leone compiled by the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone. Commissioner Tejan-Cole said the provision of basic social amenities was key to achieving human rights. He said the country had a lot to do in the areas of economic and social rights. Tejan-Cole said corruption; poverty and development were issues worthy of consideration in terms of achieving human rights.Henry Sheku, Public Information Officer of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone said the commission decided to launch its report at Kroo Bay because it wanted to associate itself with deprived communities. Benedict Sannoh, UNIOSIL’s Chief of Human Rights and Rule of Law Officer pointed out that most of the causes of the war are still prevalent in the country. Mr. Sannoh said the pursuit of human rights and justice was crucial to the sustenance of peace in the country.
