A group called ‘Concerned Teachers Sierra Leone’ says it is dissatisfied with the operations of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union or SLTU.
The group says the tenure of office of the current executive is long overdue. It calls for democratic participation in the formation of a new Sierra Leone Teachers Union Executive. The group claims that the SLTU was not accountable to its members. It says the personal interest of the current executive has reduced the respect for teachers. Samuel Kargbo, Teacher of the Government Rokel Secondary School told CTN that the Anti- Corruption Commission should investigate the executive of the SLTU and said dues should not be collected from teachers’ salaries until their concerns were addressed. Davidson Kuyateh, Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union told CTN that the executive was concerned about the welfare of its members and the union was ready to receive complaints from teachers within its established structure. He noted that if the current executive could not handle the affairs of the union, there were ministries like Education and Labour that could intervene to address any grievances.
