Acting Executive Director of the National Accountability Group, NAG says corruption is rampant in present day Sierra Leone. Lavina Banduah spoke at a quiz competition for primary school pupils on the theme “Addressing Corruption to Enhance National Development at the Presidential Lounge of the National Stadium in Freetown. The event marked the start of activities on the observance of this year’s International Day Against Corruption. Mr. Banduah said the Transparency International 2008 Corruption Perception Index, CPI issued in September revealed that the country needed to do more in the fight against corruption. She said out of the one hundred and eighty-three countries surveyed by Transparency International, Sierra Leone ranked one hundred and fifty-eight scoring one point nine as against two point one in 2007. Mrs. Banduah said the quiz competition was part of NAG’s Public Education programme to promote the values of integrity, accountability and transparency. She said they decided to engage the children for them to inculcate those values as they grow up. She said that was a long time strategy to curb corruption and ensure a better and brighter future for the country. Morlai Buya Kamara, Deputy Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission agreed that corruption had become part of life and that was unfortunate. Maurideen Preparatory School Murray Town won the quiz competition, while Mariama Jabbie of Berlyn Preparatory school emerged as the best quizzer. NAG, the Anti- Corruption Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone are observing the day. The United Nations General Assembly designated ninth December as International Anti-Corruption Day.
