The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, SLAJ says it has resolved to stage a peaceful protest march in Freetown on Monday July thirteen to register its grievances over the failure by the Supreme Court to rule on its case.
SLAJ is calling for a repeal of criminal and seditious libel laws from Sierra Leone’s law books within the specified period. A press release issued by SLAJ says a twenty-one day notice has already been sent to the Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police informing him about the planned protest march. The planned march is among measures adopted by the association’s meeting convened in Freetown to assess the effectiveness of the news blackout SLAJ imposed on the judiciary on Saturday June thirteen and to review the association’s strategies. The association says the news black out remains in force. The meeting also resolved that no local newspaper will publish news on that day. Similarly, no news should be read over the radio and TV stations throughout the country. According to SLAJ a petition has also been prepared for the attention of the President and the Ombudsman requesting their intervention to protect the Constitution of Sierra Leone.
