The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has recommended its Sierra Leonean Director-General to serve the agency for a second term.
A press release from UNIDO says the organisation reached the decision on Tuesday at its thirty-sixth session of UNIDO’s Industrial Development Board in Vienna. The board comprises fifty-three countries out of the one hundred and seventy-three Member States. The release said that the first Director-General from Sub-Saharan Africa Dr. Kandeh Yumkella would be nominated for confirmation by the UNIDO’s General Conference at its thirteenth session slated for December this year in Vienna. According to the release, member states thanked Sierra Leonean born Dr. Yumkella for “reinvigorating and refocusing the work of the Organization over the last four years.” The members therefore wanted a second term for Dr. Yumkella to fully implement his vision and leadership. On 17 June this year, Dr. Yumkella was appointed by the UN Chief, Ban Ki-moon to lead a new high-level advisory group consisting of business leaders and experts. The group will advise on energy and climate change challenges. Dr. Yumkella also chairs the inter-agency mechanism known as UN-Energy.
