The German Africa Award would be presented to Dr. Christiana Thorpe, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone in September 2009 in Germany.
The award is in recognition of Dr. Thorpe’s outstanding efforts in ensuring free and fair elections and the promotion of democracy in Sierra Leone. Rolf Saligmann the German Ambassador to Sierra Leone told journalists that an independent jury of the German African Foundation, selected Dr. Thorpe as winner of the German Africa Award. Dr. Thorpe was the first Sierra Leonean to win the award. Ambassador Saligmann said the award was very important in building the country’s image in the international arena. Dr. Christiana Thorpe said she was delighted being this year’s German African Awardee.
