The Minister of Education, Youth and Sport has suggested to the Professor Gbamanja Commission of Enquiry that the educational sector can be improved if heads of schools are contracted based on performance.
Dr. Minkailu Bah spoke while making his first appearance before the commission. The Professor Gbamanja commission is probing the factors responsible for the poor performance of students at public examinations and other related issues. Dr Bah spoke about plans to establish a Teacher’s Service Commission which he said would help to solve the problems faced by teachers. The Education Minister blamed the Inspectorate and Supervisors of schools as part of the problem for the poor education system. The General Secretary of the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone, Sahr Kemo Salia told the commission that there was a lack of proper partnership between the Ministry of Education and the proprietors of schools, especially the missions’ schools. He said the ministry was dealing directly with the principals rather than the churches. Commenting on indiscipline in schools, Mr. Salia said it was hard to maintain discipline in an overcrowded school and teachers without salaries.
