The Executive Director of Help the Needy Child International (HANCI) said he is surprised that parents who willingly gave-up their children for adoption were now denying the agreements they signed.

Dr. Roland Kargbo made this statement on Wednesday following accusations of Child Trafficking by parents whose children were adopted by Maine Adoption Placement Services (MAPS), a United States based organization. He said the programme which started in 1996 saw the establishment of an orphanage along Mission Road in Makeni. Dr. Kargbo said there were about thirty-three children in the orphanage, but only twenty three of them were adopted with the consent of their parents. He said the adoption went through the required legal processes with the signing of documents by the now aggrieved parents and the Maine Adoption Placement Services. Dr. Kargbo said the adoption was done between the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs in Makeni and MAPS. He said HANCI only facilitated the links between the parents and the adopting parties. The Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs has however refused to comment, noting that the matter was under investigations.
