President Ernest Koroma sacked his Minister of Health and Sanitation, Sheku Tejan-Koroma, following the latter’s appearance in court on alleged corruption charges.
A press release from the Office of the President stated that while Mr. Koroma is standing trial, was being relieved of his duties as minister. Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana will supervise the Ministry of Health and Sanitation. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in related press release disclosed that Mr. Sheku Tejan-Koroma was charged with a three count indictment contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008.The Commission alleged that Mr. Koroma on a date unknown between March and May 2009 in Freetown abused his position as Minister. According to the ACC, the matter is in respect of the award of a contract for the supply of medical consumables and reagents to the Health Ministry; which contravened the provisions of the Public Procurement Act of 2004, through the improper award of the said contract. Mr. Koroma, who was arraigned before Justice Mary Sey on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty on all three counts. He was granted bail, while the case was adjourned to Wednesday the  December 2. In related development, President Koroma has also relieved Mr. Leonard Balogun Koroma of his duties as Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President. No reason was given for his dismissal. President Koroma has appointed Dr. Komba Kono as the new Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, subject to parliamentary approval.
