President Ernest Bai Koroma has described the completion of the second phase of the Bumbuna Hydro Electric Project, as a challenge, as it is seven times bigger than the just concluded phase one.

President Koroma was speaking on Friday at the commissioning of the completed first phase of the Project. The event which took place at the hydro site in Bumbuna Town, in the Kalansogoia Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, also saw the commissioning of the start of the second phase of the project. The commissioning was witnessed by representatives of the diplomatic corps, past and present government officials and the general public. According to President Koroma, the first phase of the Bumbuna project would provide fifty mega watts of electricity for Freetown and parts of the northern region. He said funds are already available to run the transmission line to Bumbuna Town, Magburaka, Makeni and Lunsar. The President considered the completion of the first phase of the project as a fulfillment of the vow he made in 2007, on his assumption of office. The second phase, President Koroma said would be completed in six years. The agreement for the construction of the Hydro Project was signed thirty-five years ago between the Government of Sierra Leone and its development partners, including the Italian government.
