The Mayor of Freetown has acknowledged that the inconsistent time shown on the four faces of the controversial clock on the Clock Tower at Eastern Police is as a result of technical problems.
Herbert George Williams made the admission after maintenance work on the clock by horologists, from the UK manufacturers. Mr. George-Williams said the clock was experiencing what he described as ‘a factory fault’ which the manufacturers agreed to put right. The Mayor said the clock had a two year warranty but observed that technical problems were sometimes inevitable. The Mayor apologized to the Freetown citizenry for the inconvenience promising that the clock would henceforth work to expectations. But reports say the clock could no longer chime the country’s national anthem, even after the repairs. The refurbished Clock Tower sparked violence between supporters of the APC led Freetown City Council and the main opposition SLPP when it was commissioned on the thirteenth of March last year.
