The Freetown City Council says it has completed the construction of three hundred market stalls for traders at the Sewa ground at Central Freetown.
The Deputy Mayor of the Freetown Municipality, Councilor Gibril Kanu told CTN that the stalls contained other facilities like toilets and restaurant. He said council has not agreed on the amount to be paid for the stalls with its target traders. He said council earlier suggested three million leones for a stall but that was rejected by the traders. He said the council was currently considering a minimum amount of one million five hundred thousand leones per stall. He said if the traders at the Sewa ground refused to pay the proposed rate, the council would be left with no option but to advertise the stall to other traders within the municipality. But the traders said the cost for a stall was still exorbitant since it was built from dues collected from traders. One trader particularly expressed his views about the outlook of the stalls. The Deputy Mayor of the Freetown Municipality also told CTN that the council has awarded a project for the construction of the Fisher Street market to a company called ‘Waker Fast’ He said the market when completed is intended to accommodate traders at Sani Abacha Street.
