The President of the World Bank Group says the bank has accessed an additional funding to offer a twenty million dollar job program for young people in Sierra Leone.
Robert Bruce Zoellick made the statement on Wednesday at a press conference at State House in Freetown. Mr. Zoellick said this latest move came as a result of the discussions he had with President Ernest Bai Koroma during his visit. He said President Koroma laid emphasis on youth unemployment as a fundamental issue affecting the growth and development of the country. Mr. Zoellick noted that there was a team deployed in the country to study how they could help to drive the process. The World Bank President commended the government of Sierra Leone for putting together the Agenda for Change Strategy which he said would be supported by the World Bank. He also commended the government in its effort to provide electricity, promote agriculture, develop the mining sector and reduce corruption. President Koroma thanked the World Bank President for making Sierra Leone his first country of visit, noting that it was an indication of the good relationship existing between Sierra Leone and the Bank. President Koroma noted that the World Bank had supported the decentralization program, the energy sector, agriculture, health, private sector development among others. President Koroma described his meeting with the World Bank president as fruitful noting that his government’s agenda for change strategy would be a gateway for the World Bank’s intervention. The World Bank Group President who was in Sierra Leone on a familiarization tour, visited major projects in the country funded by the World Bank.
