The Western Area District Health Management Team conducted an awareness raising session for fifty six Peripheral Health Units (PHUs) in thirty zones within the Western Area. The programme was geared towards preparation for the implementation of the Polio Vaccine campaigns across the Western Area in March and April this year. Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, District Medical Officer in the Western Area told CTN that there had been an increase in number of confirmed cases of polio and measles. He said the awareness raising working session was to constantly engage their partners through dialogue on polio eradication initiatives. Sahr David Jumu is the Community Health Officer of Lakka and Ogoo Farm Community Health Center. He said they should help in identifying what he described as high risk areas for the spread of the polio virus. Mr. Jumu said polio vaccination was a right of the child. The participants pledged their commitment to the dissemination of information on the polio vaccination exercise. The participants identified over population, migration and lack of motivation among community people as some of the problems associated with poor implementation of the polio vaccination campaigns over the years.
