Three alleged criminals have reportedly escaped from detention at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters in Freetown.
Superintendent of Police Amara Sesay, Deputy Director of the CID confirmed to CTN that the three criminals, two detained for armed robbery related offences and one for larceny escaped in the early hours of Monday. The Deputy Head of CID said according to the custody officer on duty on the night of the incident, one of the detainees requested that he wanted to drink water. Upon delivering the water to the detainee, the officer in-charge was seriously assaulted and over powered by the three detainees who subsequently escaped. Responding to the question that there were allegations that the custody officer on duty was bribed by the detainees, Superintendent Sesay said he could neither confirm nor deny the allegation. But he said it was ridiculous to think that the custody officer would be bribed and at the same time sustained such a serious injury from the attack on him by the detainees. Superintendent Sesay said the matter has been reported to the Complaint Disciplinary Internal Investigating Department (CDIID) of the Sierra Leone Police to decide if the officer on duty should be held culpable. The Deputy Director of CID said they have dispatched a number of intelligent officers who were now carrying a search for the escapees.
