Minister of Information and Communications has assured the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) that the Freedom of Information Bill will soon be discussed in Cabinet.
Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo was speaking during the 2009 IMC/ZAIN Media Awards of Excellence organized by the Independent Media Commission. The Minister said the new legislation was part of the media reforms geared towards enhancing press freedom in the country. Alhaji Ben-Kargbo said SLAJ would be incorporated into the cabinet sub-committee to discuss the draft legislation that would be consistent with good governance and freedom of information. The Information Minister promised that government would provide SLAJ its subvention and a piece of land for the construction of its Secretariat. The Minister said a country could not develop without the media. But he also urged journalists to maintain professionalism in their work.
