Rising food prices and high unemployment rate in Sierra Leone will reverse the socio-economic gains achieved in the last five years.
This is according to new Food and Agriculture Organization Representative in Sierra Leone, Kevin Gallagher. He made this statement during his first courtesy call on the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay. The meeting focused on the current food situation in the country and possible solutions. The FAO representative proposed to undertake constant monitoring of food prices including import data and stock information. He said farmers should increase on their production of essential commodities. Dr. Sesay said the Ministry was laying the foundations to increase food production in the country. He said committees have been set to make practical recommendations to increase food production. Dr. Sesay said his Ministry has engaged the Njala University to explore appropriate technologies for food production.
