The law should protect journalists because they are important actors in the development of democracy in any society. So says Dr. Jane Kirtley, an expert in journalism and media law from the United States. She spoke to journalists on Saturday at a one-day symposium organized by the US Embassy. Dr. Kirtley said the criminal liable law was a colonial legacy that undermined democracy and good governance. Dr. Kirtley said a freedom of information law would make it possible for journalists to report accurate and balanced stories. Bernadette Cole, Chairperson of the IMC and head of the Mass Communication Department at Fourah Bay College called on journalists to report objectively. She said journalists should not limit themselves to press conferences and workshops but should also practise investigative journalism. She called on media institutions to support their reporters in carrying out investigative journalism.
