More than 200 vacancies in Education Ministry’s professional division

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education says there are up to two hundred and eighteen vacancies in his ministry’s Professional Division.

Abdul Rashid Bayoh made this disclosure at the ongoing budget discussion at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.

He said the current employees were “overworked,” owing to understaffing in the Ministry.

A Civil Society Member, Jeneba Turay, noted that there was massive unemployment in the country and yet there was still that alarming number of vacancies in the education ministry. Meanwhile, the National Assets and Government Property Commission was thrown out of the hearings for failing to account for its 2010 budget allocation.

Gilbert Cooper of the Ministry of Information and Communication said there was no reason why some ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) were falling short of the presentation format because the procedures were clearly detailed in the budget hearing circular.
