Journalist wins criminal libel case.

The Magistrate Court in Kenema has discharged journalist, Sheku Tanga who was on trial on charges of criminal and defamatory libel.

Mr. Tanga was also awarded one and a half million Leones in cost. Magistrate Komba Kamanda acceded to a no-case submission by the defense. He said the plaintiff Albert Leigh, Chief Executive Officer of Harris Construction Company had no right to sue on his personal behalf. Last May, Mr. Tanga was charged after reporting a story claiming that the headquarters of the Kenema City Council was substandard. In reacting to the judgment, the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Umaru Fofana said it was a sign that despite the challenges, press freedom was still alive in Sierra Leone.
