Sierra Leone observes International Women's Day
Women in Sierra Leone observed the International Women's Day, a day set aside by the United Nations to showcase the achievements of women around the world. The theme for this year's observance was ‘Equal rights, Equal opportunities, Progress for All.' Many women's rights organizations have been campaigning and lobbying for equal opportunities of women with their male counterparts. The Fifty/Fifty Group, a coalition of women's organisation calling for equal representation in all spheres of public life, has been leading the campaign. But many Sierra Leonean women say they know little or nothing about the day. They called on Women's Rights Groups to educate them on the relevance and significance of the day and to engage state actors on the issues affecting women such as domestic violence, rape and other forms of sex-abuse. Parliament in 2007 enacted the Three Gender Laws; Devolution of Estates, Registration of Customary marriage and Divorce and Domestic violence, to help protect the rights of women in Sierra Leone.
